Understanding the Periodic Table:
In 1869, Mendeleev proposed a periodic law on the basis of physical and chemical properties empirically. He stated that " The properties of the elements are a periodic function of their atomic weight."In certain cases Mendeleev left gaps, which were modified by Moseley.
In 1913, Henry Moseley discovered the modern periodic table. He proposed a modern periodic law and stated that " The physical and chemical properties of elements are the periodic function of their atomic number."
The periodic table is a tabular arrangement of the chemical elements, organized on the basis of their atomic numbers, electron configurations, and recurring chemical properties. The elements are presented in order of increasing atomic number. The standard long form of the periodic table includes seven periods (horizontal rows) and eight groups (vertical columns).
Groups and Periods:
Groups (Vertical columns):
Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties and the same number of valence electrons. For example, all elements in Group IA (the alkali metals) have one valence electron and are highly reactive.
There are two types of group in the periodic table
- Sub Group A (IA-VIIIA) referred to as representative elements.
- Sub Group B (IB - VIIIB) referred to as transition elements.
Periods (Horizontal rows):
Periods indicate the number of electron shells an element has. As we move from left to right across a period, the number of electrons and protons increases, which generally decreases the atomic radius and increases the electronegativity and ionization energy.
Periods (Horizontal Rows):
- Period 1 (H ⟶ He),
- Period 2 (Li ⟶ Ne),
- Period 3 (Na ⟶ Ar),
- Period 4 (K ⟶ Kr),
- Period 5 (Rb ⟶ Xe),
- Period 6 (Cs ⟶ Rn)
- Period 7 (Fr ⟶ Og)
Blocks:
The periodic table is divided into blocks that correspond to the type of atomic orbital being filled with valence electrons. These blocks are the s-block, p-block, d-block, and f-block.
- The s-block elements includes Groups IA and IIA.
- The p-block elements includes Groups IIIA to VIIIA.
- The d-block includes all the Sub Group B.
- The f-block, which is typically shown below the main body of periodic table, includes two horizontal series of fourteen elements in each, generally known as the lanthanides and actinides.
Special Element Groups:
Certain groups of elements have special names.
For example:
- Group IA elements are known as alkali metals.
- Group IIA elements are alkaline earth metals.
- Group VIIA elements are halogens.
- Group VIII A elements are noble gases.
- The transition metals, found in the d-block, are known for their ability to form variable oxidation states and colored compounds.
- The f-block elements, comprising the lanthanides and actinides, are often referred to as inner transition metals.
